Our backcountry guided tours may be customized according to ability and interest. All SMG guides are licensed, well qualified, and their priority is providing a safe, quality experience. Through our yurt and our day tours we cover the best backcountry skiing in Idaho.
Sawtooth Mountain Guides offers a wide variety of guided backcountry skiing options. Many backcountry enthusiasts know us for our famed Williams Peak Hut, which accesses the finest ski terrain in the region. In the vicinity of the hut, we have outstanding powder glade skiing, as well as long tours which link up high cirques. If learning to ski the steeps or finding new powder stashes is a goal, the Northern Sawtooths offer unlimited possibilities. Your guide will make a perfect match with you, your interests and the terrain. Take it easy and don't worry about the hassles of cooking or hauling heavy loads - let your guides cater the perfect trip for you. See our yurt page for more details on guided hut trips.
Our well kept secret is the terrain covered through our special use permits providing access for day backcountry skiing jaunts, offering unlimited powder stashes between storms.
A number of options for all ability levels are accessible as day tours from Galena Summit which is convenient from the Ketchum and Sun Valley area. Ridge tours lead to great views of the Boulder, Smokey, White Cloud and Sawtooth Mountains. Ridges drop way to glades, chutes or beautiful sub-ridge runs.
Between Galena and Stanley is a range of additional skiing options; from gentle jaunts to advanced ski mountaineering. We can also use the other huts in the Sawtooths and create a custom hut to hut trip while linking countless powder lines.
To the west and north of Stanley is one of central Idaho's secret snowbelts, where finding powder is the norm rather than the exception. One side of Copper Mt. has beautiful long glade runs, which always have excellent snow. The North Side of Copper offers more advanced steep skiing, with exceptional chutes and bowls. With a full-day and a sense of adventure one can explore the Copper mountain/Cape Horn area which is the headwaters of the famed Middle Fork of the Salmon.
Ski the Steeps and develop technique in managing terrain with your guide. Chutes range from intermediate straight shots to skiing advanced winding couloirs beneath dramatic Sawtooth spires.
Objectives can be day tours from the Stanley Basin or multi-day trips into the Wilderness. These can be one-on-one or a group of friends. Whether your goals are steep skiing tips and tricks, snowclimbing or just getting out, we've got it covered. No scheduled dates, call to arrange.
