Adventure Network
"Network" is one of the great buzzwords of the information era. Most often the word is used in the context of technology and computers-"networking the office." The Sawtooth Mountain Guides Adventure Network is more about people than computers. We are part of a community of guides, retailers, equipment manufacturers, and outfitters. Sometimes we compete with each other for business, but more often we work together to share resources and solve problems.

The SMG Adventure Network is partly rooted in the fact that SMG guides are not just rock climbers. We grew up in the mountains and are as happy holding kayak paddles as ski poles. Many of our guides work in the industry year round. Kirk Bachman guides heli-skiers in Alaska and ski-mountaineers in Ecuador. Chief Winter Guide Julie Meissner recently started up her own guide service, a walk and wade fishing operation called Sawtooth Fishing Guides. Erik Leidecker and Pete Patterson guide for Sun Valley Heli-Ski.

Another foundation of SMG Adventure Network stems from the unique mountain/river trips that we offer. No expanse of backcountry in the United States provides a more seamless environment for a combination of mountain-based and whitewater-based adventure. To run these trips we work in conjunction with seasoned river operators who specialize in whitewater floating.

SMG confidently uses the Patagonia layering system. Their gear is light and functional and they stand solidly behind their products. During the winter of 2001 we operated a "dealer camp" at our Williams Peak Hut with regional Patagonia retailers. We try to establish symbiotic relationships with these stores. They keep their bulletin boards posted with information about SMG and we send customers to their stores to get outfitted for our trips. This is what the Adventure Network is all about.
