Powder Magazine's December Issue

Last spring Powder Magazine came to the Williams Peak Hut to do a story on skiing in the Sawtooths with a team of Idaho brothers. Zac and Reggie Crist and Rob and Rick Greener timed it perfectly and skied some of the best lines in the area in near-perfect conditions. Zac is shown here ripping Big Fatty off the East Ridge of Williams Peak.

New for Winter 2003/2004: Ice Climbing Seminar

This winter SMG will offer a three-day ice climbing seminar in the Pioneer Mountains near Ketchum. Scheduled for December 5-7, 2003 the course will be based at Sun Valley Heli-Ski's Pioneer Yurt, which is situated adjacent to the big ice flows on 11,650 ft. Cobb Peak. The course is geared towards beginners and budding leaders alike. If you've never been ice climbing before or want to learn how to place screws and lead efficiently then this course is for you. The fee will be $425, which includes professional, licensed guiding, food, and hut rental fees to Sun Valley Heli-Ski.

Avalanche Education

Sawtooth Mountain Guides has been teaching field-based avalanche education since 1992. For the 2003/2004 season we have a full-slate of training including two Level I classes and one Level 2 class. Check the link above for more information about our classes. Our December 12-14th Level 1 class is full but space remains for the January 9-11 Level 1 and the January 29-February 1 Level 2.

Williams Peak Yurts

We continue to offer backcountry skiing at the Williams Peak Yurts. Located on the East Shoulder of Williams Peak around 8,000 feet, this backcountry hut provides access to some of the best off-piste ski terrain anywhere! Parties without avalanche training or a prior visit need to ski in with a guide for a proper orientation. Although most weekends are booked through March many mid-week dates are still available. Contact us today to make a reservation!

Getting in the Wood by Erik Leidecker

Note: this story ran in the Boise Weekly last November.

Cutting firewood at the William’s Peak Yurt, a winter backcountry ski hut operated by Kirk Bachman, owner of Stanley-based Sawtooth Mountain Guides, is a November tradition. The heating, cooking, and general living needs of a winter’s worth of yurt guests necessitates a stockpile of at least four cords of wood. To get the job done, Bachman enlists the help of friends, neighbors, guides, and anyone willing to wield a saw and drag trees through the snow. During last weekend this year’s detail consisted of eight worker/skiers who knew, because of the early season snowfall, that if they got the wood in fast enough they just might be able to sneak in a few turns.
