Founded in 1985, Sawtooth Mountain Guides is a full-service, year-round mountain guide service, headquartered in Stanley, Idaho at the foot of the Sawtooth Range. During the summer months, Sawtooth Mountain Guides specializes in a broad range of mountain activities including mountaineering and rock climbing, custom trekking, and high lakes fly-fishing. As the area's mountaineering permitee of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Sawtooth Mountain Guides provides the Sun Valley area with a Climbing School providing instructional formats for Half-Day, Full-Day, and Multi-Day activities. Guided programs are also offered at the desert City of Rocks and on Mt. Borah, Idaho's highest Peak.

In winter, Sawtooth Mountain Guides provides unique backcountry skiing opportunities through the renowned Sawtooth Hut System. From our Williams Peak Hut, located in the northern Sawtooth Wilderness, offerings include guided backcountry skiing and telemark instruction, avalanche courses, powder skiing, and spring ski mountaineering.

We specialize in designing custom mountain adventures for individuals, families, special groups, and organizations. Customizing a mountain trip might begin with teaching rock climbing to a family and combining this experience with an off-trail trek to some great lakes for fly-fishing. Maybe you would like to explore the possibilities for climbing the many remote granite peaks in the Sawtooths? Or maybe still you would like to combine a mountain-based excursion with exciting whitewater rafting? The Sawtooth range is the headwaters for the Payette and Salmon Rivers, two of the most famous whitewater rivers in North America. Sawtooth Mountain Guides can design seamless trips that integrate a variety of outdoor adventure sports.

With well over a century of experience among our seasoned guides, we pride ourselves in detailing the best experience possible for you, whether it’s a half-day climb or trek, a retreat for your Wall Street firm, or an expedition to a remote corner of the world with us as your leaders and companions.

Sawtooth Mountain Guides is a limited liability company under the direction of Kirk Bachman and Erik Leidecker. Kirk (right) is an American Mountain Guides Association Certified Alpine and Ski Mountaineering Guide and has guided extensively throughout the western US, Alaska, Canada, and South America. He founded SMG in 1985. After ten years of guiding with SMG, Erik became a part owner in 2003. He is an all-around mountain guide with guiding and climbing experience in the Idaho mountains and throughout the world.
