The Ski and Snowboard Mountaineering Camp is held in the northern
Sawtooth Range and is perfect for skiers and snowboarders who would
like to further develop skills in mountaineering and backcountry
skiing. During the course we will ascend several of the northern
Sawtooth summits, including Thompson Peak 10,751 ft. and Williams
Peak 10,635 ft. The alpine location of the course is perfect for
developing alpine skills and providing opportunities for ski/board
descents.
Springtime provides opportunities for splendid corn skiing, or, the chance to do some really great powder skiing in the high alpine bowls if we receive stormy weather. It is an excellent opportunity for skiing and exploring parts of the range which are inaccessible during the winter months!
Initially, our group will base from the Williams Peak Yurt at
8,000ft. where we will review backcountry skiing techniques. From
the hut, we will then venture toward the high peaks and establish
a higher camp for some additional mountaineering options. During
the five days we will conduct clinics in snow camping, snow
climbing, and general mountaineering (including the proper use of
ice axe, rope, crampons, etc.). Mountain weather, route selection,
and evaluating the avalanche hazard will also be a focus for the
Camp.
While skills development and providing an opportunity to focus on some alpine objectives will be the theme of the camp, we will emphasize the enjoyment of skiing in spectacular alpine terrain and take time to also relax and absorb the incredible ambiance of the Sawtooths. This camp will provide the participant with experience in snow climbing and skiing to join us on ventures to other snowy mountain ranges throughout the world!
