Youth Mountaineering Camp

<Youth Continued enthusiasm for our kids’ programs sees us into our ninth year offering the top notch Sawtooth Youth Mountaineering Camp and the Hot Rocks Youth Climbing Camp for both visiting and local participants. Time spent in our programs will provide an opportunity to develop a life-long relationship with very special backcountry environments. During the camp our groups will be presented with a variety of wilderness challenges. Both environmental demands and social dynamics of the expedition will provide an excellent opportunity for participants to demonstrate responsibility as expedition members, exhibit leadership qualities, and share the rewards of a dynamic wilderness experience.

We operate our kids’camps over a twelve day period. We spend the first seven days in the Sawtooth Mountains focusing on mountaineering, rock climbing, low-impact camping, backcountry traveling, orienteering, and fly-fishing. Although the location of each camp changes from year to year, we typically operate day excursions from one or two different base camps.

During days five through twelve we travel to the City of Rocks where we further develop climbing skills learned during the first week. By the end of the program students will be able to competently and safely pursue the increasingly popular sport of rock climbing.

It’s possible to join us for one component at a time or for the entire twelve days. Either way, kids get an outstanding introduction to spending time in the out of doors.

The Sawtooth Youth Mountaineering Camp focuses on experiential and group-centered learning. Kids work together to perform camp duties, prepare meals, and participate in activities. Unlike many other wilderness programs, the Sawtooth Youth Mountaineering Camp isn't rigidly institutionalized. Learning and growth are rooted directly in the individual and collective experience of the group, and in the guidance of the instructors who are experts at utilizing opportunities at hand to provide valuable learning situations. Though the camp is physically demanding, and participants must learn to cooperate and communicate to maintain a healthy and friendly group dynamic the emphasis is on maintaining a light- hearted spirit and having fun!
